First week in Wanaka there was Matariki which is a celebration of the Maori New Year. So we went down to the lake where the celebrations were taking place one night. It was a real good vibe with lot's of people there showing their respect to this yearly tradition and learning something about what it's all about, it was awesome to be there for it, if you want to read more on what Matariki is all about google it, here's a link to one site with pretty good info....
